My parents' activism during the Jim Crow and the Civil Rights eras taught me that speaking up for justice is not optional - it's essential. With four decades working in media and teaching communications systems, I have witnessed a consistent, painful pattern: the narratives of multicultural women are systematically absent, filtered through gatekeepers, or silenced entirely. It has taken me 30 years to develop an integrated, multi-platform teaching system toward change, which is now ready to share. My Power of Voice equity courses will help women of color correct the overlooked legacy narratives and write themselves into history.
Power of Voice equity courses use three integrated components to amplify women's stories: Artwalk & History takes you back in time to study how images and stories shaped narratives during colonization and conflict. You'll examine what was stereotyped, changed, erased, or silenced—and why it matters today. The Writers Salon brings together multicultural women in a confidential, healing space to reflect on their own stories and decide what legacy they want to leave. This is where you'll find your voice and claim your narrative. My textbook, Power of Voice and our companion Multicultural Journals provide frameworks and published examples of stories we have placed in the historical record. This integrated teaching system has the cultural competence, journalistic integrity and equitable balance needed to change perspectives for those wanting to understand more about our world. |
