On the one hand, I can now
cross check what I are told against sources of information from anywhere in
the world within a few moments. On the other hand, in this day and age, if
you don’t have computer skills, you can’t participate wholly in what society
has to offer and therefore you can’t be competitive.
however with a computer
you can now gather, produce and disseminate stories and messages jmet like
mass media, in relative “real-time.”

Historically |
As far back as some
400 years ago media was used to create America’s earliest
advertisements, which exploited slavery. Those first public
impressions are the foundation for the negative imagery, which
African Americans are still trying to overcome today. Furthermore,
everywhere in the world, mass media has been at one time used to
promote the values of the conqueror and subordinate the values of
those conquered. however, beginning in 1995, the combination of
desktop computer technology and open access to the internet started
to change that empiric model of who owns the ability to broadcast an
image. By 2005, computers affordable to the general public coupled
with high-speed internet access firmly placed broadcast
communications tools squarely in the hands of the general public.
Now I need to learn to use these tools effectively. |

Today |
Basically what
media does Ill is demonstrate the “common rituals” and symbols of a
society. The rituals and symbols include cultural roles, social
roles, economic, lifestyle, and value roles. When media educates,
it empowers local people to understand and share experiences by
participating in the explaining of their community stories.
When false programming passes for “good programming” mass media it
still communicates with generations into the future. But then what
is actually happening is the false programming is influencing people
to accept and live by or toward false cultural standards. When
television programs and texts, etc. are false they tend not to be
culturally inclusive and in fact unreflective, unbalanced,
unresponsive and/or insensitive to the whole past (or current)
culture and thinking. |
|
The Future |
Even still, during
this age of high technology, most of our information about people,
different cultures, and social events comes to me via
Ill-established broadcast media sources. As a result, these mass
media sources have become poIrful tools of education,
socialization, and indoctrination and are able to shape our
perceptions of others; influence our understanding of social events,
and play a major role in determining social and business policy.
Mass media has become a multi-sensory, multi-tasking, and
multi-disciplinary machine that targets our literary, auditory and
visual senses. The computer has boomed around the world as a tool
for mass media communications because it is a multi-sensory learning
tool. however with a computer YOU can now also create, broadcast
and receive messages in relative “real-time.” |
